Because I know it as surely as I’ve ever known anything—that dragon came very close to toasting us today, and he won’t give up next time.

As I curl onto the couch and pull the blanket up under my chin, I can’t prevent the silent tears from rolling down my cheeks.

I cry angry tears for what I’ve lost with Jaxon.

I cry regretful tears that Jaxon will never know what happened to me.

I cry hopeful tears that one day someone else loves him as much as I did.

I cry every emotion I’m feeling, and as the last tear dries on my cheek, I know it was a tear of joy for being loved so much by someone so wonderful, even if briefly.

It almost makes the fact that I’m going to die soon not suck completely.

Don’t Make It
—Grace—

Eventually, I’m all cried out, but I still can’t sleep.

Hudson of course seems to have had no problem falling right off without saying one more word to me. Which is fine. It’s not like I have so much to say to him right now, either. Except maybe thank you—for helping with my panic attack and for baking a pumpkin pie with me.

I have to admit, I never saw either of those things coming, but maybe I should have. I’ve read a lot of his journals over the last year, and they’ve all been so contradictory to the guy I was told he was. The guy who tried to kill his own brother. The guy who uses mind control like it’s the best invention of the twenty-first century. The guy who believes in vampire superiority so completely that he’s willing to kill for it.

That’s the Hudson his brother knows. The Hudson everyone at Katmere knows. So why am I beginning to figure out that the Hudson I know is a very different person?

He makes ridiculous birdcalls.

Freaks out when I eat next to one of his precious books.

Throws axes like the demons from hell are after him.

And puts himself between a fire-breathing dragon and some girl he has absolutely no reason to want to help.

It doesn’t make sense.

Are there really two Hudsons, or does one of us have it wrong? And if one of us is mistaken, who is it? Them or me?

More, how will I ever figure it out?
