But it’s too little, too late. I’m pissed, and I’m going to be for a while. Because we are all each other has in this world, and if he keeps lying to me about something as important as his health, then what the fuck are we doing?

And where the fuck are we supposed to go from here?

Always Look a Gift
Mayor in the Mouth
—Grace—

I fume all the way back to the boutique. And the day only goes downhill from there. Not only are we super busy—I mean “standing room only” busy—but my boss had a fight with her husband today, too, so she’s in a really bad mood.

She doesn’t take it out on me, but she has absolutely no patience with the difficult customers. Which leaves me to soothe an awful lot of ruffled feathers, something I try to be good at but only really succeed at about half the time.

It’s fifteen minutes from closing time and two hours after I was supposed to get off before things finally calm down. I’m starving from working through dinner and grumpy because the afternoon rush pretty much obliterated the shelves and the racks, and I’m the one who has to get them all organized again before I can leave tonight.

Add in the monster headache building right behind my eyes that promises to ruin the rest of my night, and I am in a fantastic mood. Especially since the fight I have to have with Hudson is already looming over my head.

Into this maelstrom of problems, both petty and real, walks Souil. He’s got a congenial grin on his face and eyes full of sympathy, but I wasn’t born yesterday. Those seventies suits of his don’t come from this boutique. Which means the only reason he’s here is because he wants to see me.

Too bad I don’t feel the same way.

It’s not that I have anything against him. I don’t. He seems like a nice enough guy for a politician, but the last thing I want to talk about tonight is that time dragon. Especially with him.

Besides, half the reason Hudson is so wiped is Souil’s fault. The mayor refuses to warn the townspeople of the impending dragon attack yet, although we did get him to promise to caution citizens to stay inside during Starfall while we confront the dragon outside the town’s walls. So Hudson has been running around after work fortifying the town walls and gates and whatever buildings he can with minimum outside help.

I grit my teeth as Souil launches into another story about how he became mayor. I am too tired to listen.
