“We could,” she agrees, even as she rolls off me and out of bed. “But then we wouldn’t be able to quiz him about how he was sure at the bakery the dragons wouldn’t be a problem, and then they did their best to murder everyone. Besides, you saw that man. If we don’t show up, I have no doubt he’ll be here beating down our door ten minutes later. He seems very determined to thank us.”
Smokey, disturbed by all the fuss in the room, makes an annoyed noise right before she slides under the crack in the window and shimmies down the side of the building. I think about calling her back, but it’s not like she listens to me.
“He was very aggressive with his gratitude,” I say after a few seconds, responding to Grace’s comments about the mayor. I sit up, watching with interest as Grace bends over to rummage through the pile of dirty and semi-dirty clothes on the floor.
It’s been a busy few weeks and laundry hasn’t exactly been a priority. We’re going to have to change that soon.
Then again, if we had clean clothes, I’d be looking at a very different view. And that would be a shame, because the way Grace looks in a T-shirt really is a thing of beauty. I’ve seen enough of her memories to know she disagrees, but I think she’s bloody gorgeous—inside and out.
“I honestly don’t think we have anything to wear that isn’t covered in dragon blood or sweat,” she says. “Grateful or not, I’m pretty sure old Souil is going to be unimpressed by our sartorial situation.”
“Yeah, well, he doesn’t need to be impressed.” I walk over to the pile and pull out the pair of jeans I wasn’t wearing last night. Yeah, they’re a little dirty from school, a faint child’s sticky handprint on the knee, but it’s a lot better than showing up covered in blood.
Besides, we’ve got a brunch to attend. And like Grace said, the mayor doesn’t exactly strike me as the patient type.

We Roll with
the Brunches
—Grace—
While I wasn’t in a position to notice it last night, Souil’s house is the most beautiful one on the street. Like pretty much every other house in Adarie, it’s purple. But unlike many of the other houses, it’s five or six different shades of purple that all work really well together. Add in the half-timbering on the front and sides and the boxes filled with cheerful flowers beneath every front-facing window, and the place radiates stately elegance and a charm I wasn’t expecting.
