“Grace!” He breathes a relieved sigh. “You’re back!”

“No thanks to you,” I snarl at him, even though I know it’s not true. The only reason I got out of that stone is because of him, and I’m smart enough to know it. Just like I’m smart enough to know he said what he said on purpose.

Not that I’m about to let him know that. Not after he threatened to turn me into a hummingbird feeder, for God’s sake.

“Hey.” He gives a negligible shrug. “You’d make a cute birdbath. Plus, I figured it would help keep your spirits up. I didn’t want you to get depressed.”

“You’re a real giver like that,” I tell him as I start walking.

“I really am.” He heaves a big sigh. “Although I am a little sad to lose my boxer stand.”

“Keep it up, Vega, and I’ll find a boxer stand for you. But you’re not going to like what I do with it.”

“Such violence, Grace.” He shakes his head sadly, but I can see the amused gleam in his eyes. “I thought gargoyles were supposed to be the peaceful sort.”

“I have no idea what gargoyles are supposed to be!” I snap. “I’ve never met one before.”

“I never had, either, before you.” He takes the books out of my arms and falls into step beside me, and we walk in silence for a few blocks.

Hudson keeps glancing at me out of the corner of his eye, little concerned looks that should piss me off but somehow don’t. By the time we get back to the inn, I’ve actually calmed down enough to say what’s really on my mind.

“How do I make sure that doesn’t happen again?”

“Practice,” he tells me, pressing a supportive hand to my lower back. “We figure it out, and then we practice. A lot.”

Passing the Pouspous

—Grace—

So that’s exactly what I do for the next week.

With Hudson’s help, with Caoimhe’s help, even with Nyaz’s help.

I practice turning into a gargoyle and practice turning human again. Practice turning into a gargoyle, practice turning human. Over and over and over.

Sometimes it happens easily, and sometimes I can’t do it at all. Sometimes I’m stuck in stone for an hour or more. But I always manage to find my way back, and eventually I get stuck less and less.

And yes, I know there’s more to being a gargoyle than just changing to stone and back, but it’s a good start. Especially since I’m not quite ready to try to figure out flying. I still remember turning to stone and accidentally impaling the dragon on my hands.
