“I’m sorry to hear that,” Maroly says softly.
“Me too.” I give her a smile to cushion the words. Then tell her the whole spiel about Uncle Finn, Macy, and Katmere Academy.
“Is that where you met Hudson?” she asks. “This Katmere Academy.”
“Something like that, yeah.” I don’t know why, but I don’t want these people to know what happened with Hudson back home. If anyone deserves a fresh start, it’s him.
“And he doesn’t mind your power?” She reaches for one of the squared-off melons I noted earlier, uses a scissors to snip it from the vine.
“My power?” I repeat. “Oh, no. I’m not like everyone else at school. I’m human, not paranormal. I don’t have any power.”
Maroly stops in the middle of snipping another melon and turns to look at me.
I wait for her to say something placating, like it doesn’t matter or power is highly overrated anyway. The things I used to tell myself a lot when I was trying to figure out why on earth someone like Jaxon would want to be with someone like me.
But she doesn’t do that. She doesn’t downplay the power thing at all. Instead, she narrows those gorgeous purple eyes of hers like she’s trying to see inside me and asks, “Are you sure about that?”
“Am I sure about what?” I ask, confused.
“That you don’t have any power. Because I’m pretty good at sensing magic, and from where I’m standing, it feels like you’ve got a whole lot of it inside you.”

There Has to Be
an Udder Way
—Grace—
I’m still thinking about my conversation with Maroly the next day after spending the last three hours trying to milk a tago—and by trying I mean anything but succeeding. If I had any magic, I’d have ended that misery the first time one of the six-sided udders sprayed me in the face.
The whole idea of my having magic is completely nonsensical, but so is nearly everything else she said about me that morning.
“Oh, I’m not magic,” I told her when she brought it up. “Neither were my parents. I guess my dad was technically a warlock, but he lost his power when he married my mother and left his coven. And I’ve never had any.”
“I wouldn’t be too sure about that,” she said as she moved gracefully between rows and started picking handfuls of eggplant-colored lettuce. “Magic manifests differently in everyone, Grace.”
“Maybe it does here in Noromar, but back home, you either have it or you don’t. There’s no in-between.”
“Hmm. It sounds like you come from a very unforgiving world.”
