The answer to that would be no, I had no idea she was even talking, which I wisely do not tell her. I shove my hands into my pockets and rock back on my heels. Really, how am I supposed to understand words with Grace standing in front of me wearing the smallest dress in history?

I swallow as I take in two spaghetti straps that reach into a bouquet of brilliant silk flowers sewn around the edges of the top of the red dress. A top that has just barely enough fabric to cover her ample chest before hugging every glorious curve Grace has and ending a mere two inches past her ass cheeks.

“Hudson!” Grace shouts, and I jerk my gaze up to hers, a flush creeping into my cheeks as I finally take in her distress. She moans. “I cannot go out there in this.”

“You look amazing,” I say, because it’s true.

A woman with several pencils shoved behind her ears and a clipboard in her hands rushes over and shouts, “You’re on!”

Grace’s eyes widen, her bottom lip trembles, and I know I can’t let her go out there in that dress. Not if it makes her feel uncomfortable.

There’s only one option I can think of. I turn to Orebon and say, “If you guys don’t mind, I’ve got an idea, but it’s a solo gig to warm up the crowd.”

I hold his gaze, silently begging him to let me do this for Grace, until he gives me one quick nod.

Then I reach over and pick up the guitar I’d tuned earlier and head out onto the stage. Alone. Where I am more than prepared to die of embarrassment if it saves Grace the same.

My heart is pounding in my throat and I feel queasy as fuck, but I pull the guitar strap over my shoulder, approach the mic anyway.

I settle my right hand into the familiar position for a G chord.

Because even though I didn’t plan to do this, now that I’m here, I know exactly what song I want to play.

Grace’s favorite.

—Grace—

“Um, hey.” Hudson’s voice is hesitant as he leans into the mic. He gives a little cough to the side, then continues. “My name’s Hudson, and I’m part of this amazing troubadour group called The Horizons.”

I’d totally forgotten they told us that information what seems like days ago. Leave it to Hudson to have paid attention to every detail, though.

Caoimhe starts to follow him out, but Orebon places a hand on her elbow and shakes his head, whispering, “We never upstage a fellow performer.”

They have some sort of silent communication before she steps back, and we all turn as one to see what Hudson does next.
