“Oooookay. And does that mean you want to keep standing here? Or do you want to walk back to the inn?”

“We can walk back to the inn,” I tell him, but I’m so mad that I end up freezing in place.

“Or we can stand here,” Hudson says.

I don’t answer him…because I can’t. I’m completely stone now.

Between a Rock
and a Hard Grace
—Grace—

Oh. My. God.

I’m as solid stone as every other gargoyle I’ve ever seen on buildings.

Which makes me wonder—are they people, too? All those gargoyles on the Cathedral of Notre-Dame? Are they real? The thought blows my mind, and I promise myself that once I manage to get out of this, I’ll do some research into that.

In the meantime, Hudson is leaning forward and peering into my eyes like he’s trying to figure out if I’m still in here. I am, obviously, but I have no way of knowing how to tell him that.

Before I can so much as attempt a squeak, a bright purple butterfly comes by and lands on my nose. And it tickles. A lot.

And I can’t do anything about it.

Hudson comes to my rescue, though, shooing it away when I obviously can’t.

Panic is welling up within me, and I don’t know how to stop it. I try to take a deep breath, but it turns out that stone doesn’t breathe all that well.

I try to count, but the counting usually comes with the breathing.

I can’t dig my feet into my shoes, can’t ground myself with sensory details, because there are none. I mean, I can see and I can hear, but that’s about it. And I can’t even see that much—only what’s right in front of me, which at the moment happens to be Hudson.

The panic gets worse, starts to cloud my head. Starts to make it harder and harder for me to think. I need out of this. I just need out of it. I need—

“Hey.” Hudson’s voice is a little too sharp and a little too loud, but it manages to burrow through the layers of panic and get my attention. “You’re okay, Grace,” he says. “You’re okay.”

That’s it? I want to tell him. That’s all you’ve got for me? I’m freaking stone over here, and you’re just going to stand out there and tell me I’m okay?

I’m not okay! This is not okay!
