She’s smiling and laughing, her brown eyes sparkling in the fairy lights above us, and she’s never looked more beautiful. As she finishes her strange veggie on a stick, I reach out and run the back of my finger down her face.
She stops chewing and looks at me, her eyes going from chocolate to black in an instant. I think about leaning forward and kissing her, but before I can, someone jostles her from behind and sends her careening into my chest.
Instinctively, my arms go around her and, though we’ve certainly touched in the last few weeks, this feels different. Better. And for a second, I forget how to breathe.
But then someone bumps into me this time, and I acknowledge I’ve got to get her out of this corner before she gets hurt.
So I walk us one street down to the carnival games section of the festival, which hasn’t gotten busy yet. Grace grins when she sees them and asks, “Have you ever played any of these before?”
“Unless they have chess, the answer’s no.”
“Chess?” Her eyes go wide. “That’s seriously the only game you’ve ever played?”
“Some people will argue that it’s the only game worth playing,” I counter, along with what I know is a smug smirk. But seriously. She doesn’t actually think throwing Ping-Pong balls into fishbowls counts as a game, does she?
“Some people are snobs,” Grace responds.
“And?” I lift a brow. “It’s not like these games require any skill.”
“Oh yeah? Pick one.” She points a finger at me, then steps forward just enough for it to dig into my chest. “Pick one, and I will trounce you at it.”
“Trounce me?” I repeat as I survey the games, weighing the pros and cons of each one. “Those are big words.”
“For a girl?” she asks a little snarkily.
“For anyone,” I answer mildly. “I draw the line at throwing balls at fish. It seems cruel.”
“I always thought so, too. So we skip that one and go to…” She shoots me a questioning look.
“The Star-Crossed Ring Toss,” I say, reading a sign above the booth with about a hundred bottles lined up.
“The ring toss?” she says, sounding surprised. “That’s where you want to start?”
“That’s where I want to start,” I agree.
“Okay.” She grins, and I get my first inkling that I might have made a mistake. Even before she says, “Let the trouncing begin.”

All’s Fair in
Love and Ring Tosses
—Grace—
“I don’t understand,” Hudson says, voice rife with frustration as his fifth ring bounces off the bottles and goes flying out of bounds. “That one should have gone around the top.”
“Shoulda woulda coulda,” I tell him as I line up for my turn.
