She freezes, mouth half open, whatever she’d been about to say stalled on her tongue. She licks her lips, and I can see the wheels in her beautiful brain spinning, trying to find a way she can stay and fight while not hurting my feelings.

So I go in for the kill. “I’ve got this, Grace.”

She blinks. Once. Twice. And then she nods, and I swear, I think I could take on an entire army alone right now.

I hope I can convince the other female in my life as easily.

I slide my hand down near my ankle, and Smokey jumps into my palm instantly, her plaintive wail a full-on warble as she’s smart enough to know what’s coming, and she is most definitely not happy about it.

I consider begging her to go with Grace, but Grace surprises me—and Smokey—and reaches out to rub a couple of soft pats across the top of the shadow’s head before she says firmly, “He’s got this, Smokey.”

I can feel the umbra trembling in my hand, unsure if she can trust Grace, unsure if she wants to trust Grace. She gives another low, keening whine that makes my chest tighten painfully.

But when Smokey jumps into Grace’s arms and lets her carry them off to hide, I can’t stop the grin stretching between my cheeks, wider than ever before.

Grace tosses over her shoulder, “You’re going to be insufferable now, aren’t you?”

I don’t even bother trying to hide it. “Most likely.”

She just chuckles and replies, “Such a show-off.”

Fuck taking on an entire army. I’m pretty sure I could take on seven armies and still have enough energy to teach the Shadow Queen a lesson.

Starting now.

I Have Friends
in High Places
—Grace—

Smokey and I have only gotten about twenty yards off to the side when I hear Hudson snarl, “Who the fook are you? And what the fook do you want?”

I can’t see who he’s yelling at, but his hands are up, his fangs are bared, and he looks more than ready—more than capable—of tearing whoever is in front of him apart with his bare hands.

My heart is thundering in my chest, and I want to be able to help, or at least not hurt, but Hudson asked me to believe in him, and I know what that cost him. I won’t let him down.
