“Hey, are you seeing what I’m seeing?” Hudson asks all of a sudden, yanking me straight out of the most embarrassing existential crisis of my life and back to reality.

“Probably not, since you have way better eyesight than I do,” I answer.

“Really?” He points to the side of the structures. “You don’t see the rows carved into the ground? It looks a lot like—”

“Crops!” I interrupt excitedly. “It’s a farm!”

“It’s a working farm,” Hudson corrects me. “As in, there are people there. And food for you. And—”

“Chairs,” I whimper. “There are chairs. And maybe even a bed. And a shower. Please, God, let there be a shower.”

My stomach chooses that moment to rumble, as if the mention of a farm clues it in that it doesn’t have to pretend not to exist anymore.

“And food for you,” Hudson repeats firmly.

“What about for you?” I ask, aware of just how much has changed since we left the lair. Because if I’m this hungry, and I ate yesterday, how hungry must Hudson be, considering it’s been more than a year since he’s eaten?

I know he said it didn’t matter in the lair, but we’re not in the lair anymore. He’s going to have to eat.

The thought makes me all kinds of flushed. All kinds of uncomfortable, though I don’t know why. We’re heading to a farm. Like the blood in the coolers at Katmere, surely there’s something there that Hudson can feed on—besides me, I mean.

Crop Till You Drop

—Grace—

“Are you lost?” A voice comes from seemingly nowhere as we reach the fields of crops.

Hudson and I whirl around, trying to figure out who’s speaking, only to find a little girl of maybe ten or eleven standing several feet away from us. She’s obviously just emerged from the giant stalks of whatever vegetable it is that is growing right over her shoulder and is carrying a basket of what looks like some kind of berry I’ve never seen before.

It’s purple, of course.

Then again, so is she. Completely purple.

Glowing purple skin. Purple irises. Purple pointed ears. Even her very long hair—arranged in two French braid pigtails down her back—is a soft, sweet lavender.

The only thing about her that isn’t purple are her peach overalls…and, randomly, her teeth. As she smiles, I can’t help wishing her teeth were purple instead of white. Maybe the fact that they all gleam with razor-sharp points when she smiles would be less frightening then. As it is, it takes every ounce of willpower I have not to take a big step back—one that hopefully puts me out of range of her very serious bite.
