“Don’t!” I tell him, throwing up a hand as I stop shaking and my knees decide they’re going to support me after all. “Don’t you dare say anything about anything you might have read in my mind. You have no right—”
“No right?” His eyes narrow as he drops his hands from my arms and steps back. “You’re keeping me prisoner here, and you’re telling me I have no right?”
“It’s not like I have a choice!” My breathing has evened out in the last minute or so, and I take a deep breath, let it out slowly.
“Yeah, me neither,” he snarks back. “You don’t see me complaining.”
“Are you serious? You’re complaining right now!” I huff out a breath. “And it’s not like I’m all up in your head, reading your every thought.”
“No, you just read my journals,” he shoots back.
“You’re damn right I do,” I snarl. “And maybe I’d feel more guilty about that if you hadn’t spent the last year picking through my memories like they were after-school specials.”
“I’ve got to entertain myself somehow, don’t I?” He gestures to the books behind me. “You’ve hogged every book in the place for the last year.”
“Oh, poor baby. You only had the PlayStation, turntable, ax-throwing station, and an extensive DVD collection to keep you busy.” I give him my fakest pitying look. “However did you manage?”
Before he can reply, the dragon gives a particularly loud, particularly vicious shriek. I brace myself for the worst—can feel Hudson doing the same—but instead of slamming through the roof or something equally as awful, we can hear his wings flap as he finally gives up and flies away. For now, anyway.
As he leaves, the last of my anxiety goes with him, and I realize for the first time that my panic attack is long gone. Arguing with Hudson made me so mad that I forgot to freak out. Huh. I never saw that one coming.
But as Hudson shoots me a truly obnoxious smirk before making his way back toward his bed, I can’t help wondering if he knew exactly what he was doing. If maybe, just maybe, he’s been doing it all along.
I want to go after him, but in the end, I don’t. Because he’s already climbing into bed. And I don’t have anything new to say to him anyway.
But as I settle down on the couch, I can’t help thinking it’s going to be a long, long night as I force myself to come to terms with the fact neither of us wants to say aloud.
We’re on borrowed time.
Alive or dead, whatever we are in this limbo is about to come to an end.
