“Not even Jaxon?” As soon as he says it, he looks like he wants to kick himself.

But he’s the one who told me last night that we shouldn’t hide from the past, so I do my best to sound normal as I answer, “No, not even Jaxon. Your speed is incomprehensible.”

“Flattery will get you an extra half an hour of rest,” he tells me with the little half grin that shows off his dimple.

“If I thought you meant that, I’d be tempted to hug you,” I groan. “I honestly don’t think I can do any more today.”

“Do you want to stop?” he asks after I’ve roused myself enough to gulp down an entire bottle of water.

“It’s up to you. You’re the one doing all the work.”

He watches me for a second, like he’s trying to read my face. Then says, “I’d like to press on. We’re almost to Adarie, probably only another twenty miles through the last of the mountains if I read Arnst’s map correctly.”

I can do twenty miles. “Well, then, I say we keep going.”

Hudson looks from me to the map and back again. “Are you sure that’s what you want to do? Or would you prefer to rest more and head out in the morning?”

I shoot him an exasperated look. “I thought continuing is what you wanted to do.”

“It is,” he agrees. “But I need to make sure it’s what you want to do, too.”

His words surprise me, and I can’t help studying his face, trying to decide if he’s just messing with me. But he looks as sincere as he sounds. “You really mean that, don’t you?”

“Of course I mean it.” Now he just looks insulted. “It’s no use having a partnership if one person makes all the decisions and the other person just has to follow along. We’re either in this together or we’re not.”

“We are,” I hasten to reassure him.

“Then tell me what you want to do.”

I don’t know. I really don’t. As exhausted as I am, Hudson has to be even more so—but I would love to sleep in a real bed tonight. I study his face, looking for signs that he needs a rest, but he looks like he could fade another hundred miles, honestly. “I think we should keep going and hope for the best.”

Hudson’s laugh is dry and more than a little pessimistic. “‘The best’ seems a little out of our league right about now. How about we hope for not the worst?”

“You sure do know how to instill confidence in a girl’s heart,” I tell him.

“Just calling it like I see it, Grace. Just calling it like I see it.”

And why does that sound even more ominous?
