All Cry,
No Punishment
—Grace—

The fury in his eyes is overwhelming, and it takes every ounce of courage I have to stand my ground. This is too important. So I lift my chin and go toe to toe with him, even after he flashes his fangs at me.

“You’re a real jerk, you know that?” I glare at him. “I thought maybe there was something else—something better—behind the facade, but there really isn’t. You’re just an asshole.”

“I tried to tell you that,” he says, his grin as sharp as the regrets currently shredding my insides. “You’re the one who wouldn’t listen. Looks like we both have issues.”

“Yeah, well, at least my issues still show I have faith in people. Versus yours, which just make you mean.”

“Your issues will get you killed,” he bites back. “Don’t say I didn’t warn you when you finally find your way back to brother dearest.”

“Jaxon would never hurt me,” I tell him.

“Yeah, that’s what I used to tell myself, too. Now look where we are.”

“That’s not fair,” I tell him. “You know why he did that.”

“You’re right. I do know.” He shoves a hand through his hair before leveling me with a look that has my stomach spinning, twisting, and turning. “The question is, do you?”

I want to call his bluff, want to tell him that I know he’s just bullshitting me. But there’s something in his eyes that has the words lodging in my throat.

When I don’t answer, silence stretches taut as a circus wire between us. I hate the heaviness of it, the discomfort—it makes my skin crawl and my throat itch. But he’s the one who’s being unreasonable, the one who’s finding fault with everything I have to say.

If he wants to move this conversation forward, he’s going to have to be the one to do it.

Except before he can say a word, there’s a loud screech from outside, followed by the sound of something large and heavy banging against the door.

“He’s back,” I whisper, forgetting my determination not to speak with the absolute horror of that realization.

“Of course he’s back,” Hudson says. “You didn’t really think he was gone for good, did you?”

“No! Of course not.” I had hoped the dragon was gone, but that didn’t mean I believed it. I was counting on him giving us a little more time between attacks, however. Looks like he didn’t have the same plans.

“What do we do?” I ask as the thing screams in rage. Seconds later, I can hear the flap of his giant wings. I want to believe he’s leaving—that that’s the sound of him flying away—but I’m not that optimistic, no matter what Hudson says.
