Seconds later, someone finally takes the stage to kick everything off. He’s an old man who appears human, with flowing white hair and a craggy face, and he welcomes everyone to the festival auditions in the gravelly voice of a man who has spent his life living—and drinking—hard. He is wearing an orange-and-yellow-striped David Bowie jumpsuit—complete with gigantic fringed shoulder pads and flared legs—and he introduces himself as the mayor to anyone who might be visiting “our little oasis.”

To say I’m shocked this is the mayor who might hold our fate in his hands would be an understatement. Hudson and I exchange looks.

“We need to meet him,” Hudson murmurs to me.

I nod, because we do.

But that’ll have to wait for later. Because suddenly, Lumi is rushing over to us, gesturing wildly with his arms and shouting, “Come on! Come on! We haven’t much time!”

Hudson and I get to our feet as he asks, “Time for what?”

“To get your costumes on, of course.”

The look on Hudson’s face right now—priceless. And I send a little prayer out to the universe that his costume has sequins. The gaudier the better.

My Lady in Red

—Hudson—

When Lumi had said costume, I don’t know what I was imagining—but it wasn’t this.

I fasten the last button, then smooth a hand down the soft lavender dress shirt, admiring the silky fabric. I’m not normally a huge fan of purple—well, except in my boxers, of course—but I have to admit this shade is really gorgeous. I shove the tails into the black dress pants Orebon had handed me, then roll up the sleeves. All in all, not too shabby.

Somehow, I don’t think Grace is getting off as easy, though.

I sink my fang into my lip in an effort not to laugh as I listen to Grace argue with Caoimhe behind a folding privacy screen slash makeshift changing area set up for performers in a building behind the stage. They’re in a heated debate about…well, everything.

Grace apparently doesn’t appreciate the location of some flowers, the hem, the color, or the fit. Caoimhe insists that they will only be able to sell Grace’s “throat infection” not ruining the audition if the audience is too busy looking at her outfit to notice her lack of voice.

Which means…I literally cannot wait to see what she’s wear—

Grace steps out from behind the screen, and I freeze. I vaguely recognize I was about to run a hand through my hair, so that arm is now just hanging in the air. I’ll bring it back down when I remember how to breathe.

Instead, I just blink. And blink again.

Holy. Hell.

Grace throws a hand on her hip and demands, “Are you even listening to me, Hudson?”
