“There’s never been an election. Every five years or so—at least in my lifetime—he asks around, sees if anyone wants to take his place as mayor. He does a decent job, so nobody ever decides to run against him, I guess. So he just kind of keeps at it.”
“Wow.” I shake my head as I try to figure out how all this works.
“Indeed.” She laughs. “And speaking of long times, you’ve been here all day. Go find Hudson and do something fun.” She wiggles her eyebrows to make sure I get her meaning.
Which, no. Just no. I am not talking about Hudson’s and my sex life—or lack thereof—with my boss.
“We’re not planning on having the kind of fun you mean tonight,” I say as I grab my bag from where I stowed it under the counter when I got to work this morning.
“Well, why not?” she asks, throwing her hands up in exasperation. “You’re young and beautiful and flexible. When is there ever going to be a better time?”
Flexible? Did she really just say we were flexible? What exactly does she think Hudson and I are getting up to in the inn, with its very thin hotel walls? Then again, I don’t want to know what she’s thinking. At least, beyond that we need to be flexible to do it.
“I’ve got to go,” I tell her as I head for the door, hoping against hope that she’ll take the hint and drop it. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
Instead, she just gives me a thumbs-up sign and says, “That’s the spirit, Grace!”
Forget walking, I dive for the door. And try not to think about what’s actually going to happen when I make it back to Hudson’s and my room.

Good Girl Gone
Mad as Hell
—Hudson—
My head is fucking killing me.
Vampires aren’t normally prone to weird physical ailments—part and parcel of the whole immortality thing—but since we ended up in Noromar, with nonstop fucking sunlight, that’s definitely changed for me.
Needless to say, I’m not exactly impressed. Even Smokey isn’t impressed, given she hopped out the window ten minutes ago to pick flowers and play with some of the kids in the square rather than be cooped up in the dark with me tonight.
I took a shower when I got home from the library, but it didn’t help. Neither did trying to take a nap while I waited for Grace to get back from work.
She left a message with Nyaz earlier, telling me she had to work late. But she didn’t tell me how late, so I’ve basically been lying here in the dark—courtesy of blackout curtains—willing this headache to go the fuck away before she gets home.
So far, it’s only gotten worse.
