So even though life has taught me over and over again that there is no going through pain—there is only getting through it—I ignore the lesson, and I choose Grace. The way I’ve always chosen her. The way I will always choose her.

I let the mist go, bury my need to flee. And then I reach my hand out and say the only thing that will guarantee that Grace is mine forever.

“We can’t let Souil cross the barrier. We have to find a way to stop him.”

Grace throws her arms around my neck and holds me tight for several seconds. I hold her, too, and whisper, “Sorry,” because I know I scared her.

But she just shakes her head in an “I’ve got you” kind of way. Then pulls back and asks, “What are we going to do? We can’t let him just go back into our realm and ruin everything. We might not be there, but Uncle Finn and Macy and Jaxon and everyone else we care about still is. We can’t just let him destroy the whole world because he wants to save his daughter.”

“We know,” Caoimhe tells her in a voice that says she’s trying really, really hard to keep calm. “We just don’t know what to do about it.”

“Let me think,” I murmur as my mind starts working again.

I’ve got nothing yet, and I don’t think anyone else does, either, but my mind is finally moving again, the seeds of an idea beginning to form. But first, I turn to Lumi. “We’ve got time—at least twenty-four hours—to deal with that tosser. Right now, though, I think we should take a few minutes and…do what needs to be done.”

A lump lodges in my throat at the words. Normally, I’d be a lot more direct, but I just can’t bring myself to say out loud that we need to bury our loved ones.

Thankfully, the others figure out my meaning easily enough. “There’s a park not far from here,” Caoimhe says softly. “It’s not super fancy, but I think they might like it. Plus, it doesn’t get a ton of traffic the way the park at the center of town does.”

Several townspeople have started to poke out of their homes, and they help us move Orebon to the park. Others came and took the woman’s body, presumably to her family. The streets remain mainly deserted, which is a good thing considering our precious cargo, and we get to our destination easily.

There’s a small toolshed at the back of the park, and Lumi heads over and breaks the lock so we can “borrow” a few shovels.
