Which is why the second Trudgey is done pouring the purple mimosas, I turn to the mayor and ask the question that’s been burning at the back of my throat since we arrived. “Why do you think the dragons attacked us? And are they coming back to finish the job?”

No Such Thing
as a Free Brunch
—Grace—

Hudson chokes for the second time in the last ten minutes—this time on a sip of water.

The mayor doesn’t notice as he pulls in a very deliberate sip of his own drink and stares at me over the rim of the champagne flute.

“The dragons were after you specifically?” he asks once several long, uncomfortable seconds have passed. “Whatever gave you that idea?”

“Really? You didn’t see how the dragon—” I lean forward in my seat, but Hudson shoots me a quick warning look.

So instead of bombarding him with the three million questions currently bouncing around inside me, I force myself to have some self-control and only ask one. “You’ve never said. How did you get to the Shadow Realm?”

He laughs as he spoons some fruit onto his plate before offering the serving bowl to me. I take it and do the same, even though food is the last thing on my mind right now.

“I’m pretty sure I got here the same way you did, dear.”

“I don’t understand.” I look at Hudson for help.

“We got here accidentally,” he says, finally joining the conversation.

“Accidentally?” Souil makes a face. “Is that what you’re calling it?”

“What should we be calling it?” Hudson counters, and though his face is doing that impassive thing again, I can feel the watchfulness—and the impatience—deep inside him.

“Ancient magic, of course.” Souil looks back and forth between us, as if trying to gauge our reactions. “I’m a time wizard. And you are a—”

“Gargoyle,” I finish for him, trying not to react to the fact that the mayor just said the words “time” and “wizard” together. I’m not sure if I’m ready for what that might mean yet. So instead, I say, “Yeah, I just found that out yesterday. It’s pretty wild.”

“Gargoyle. Hmm.” He looks at Hudson. “Is that what she thinks she is?”

“It’s not what she thinks. It’s what she is,” Hudson counters with narrowed eyes.

Souil holds up a placating hand. “Of course, of course.” But the look on his face says there’s something more to the story. Maybe even a lot more.

“Is that not true?” I ask, more confused than ever but wanting to know. “Am I something else?”

“You would know that better than I, dear girl. I suppose I was just making assumptions.” He takes a sip of his mimosa, then leans back in his chair. “Now, tell me, please. How can I help the two of you?”
