Instead, that one breath becomes another and another and eventually his arms come around me, too. It’s not a lot, it’s not even close to what that tiny voice inside me says I might want from him one day. But right here, right now, it is enough. More, it’s exactly what we need.
Even Smokey must sense we need this, as she remains uncharacteristically quiet.
I know we can’t stand here holding each other all night—on the side of a mountain with an army hunting us—but I want to. When Hudson’s shoulders stiffen, I lean back to complain that I’m not ready. I just want to hold him for a little bit longer.
But as our gazes collide, he gives his head a quick shake for me not to speak. He doesn’t release me from his embrace, just tilts his head as though listening to something in the distance. And eventually, I hear what he heard, and my heart races in my chest.
Footsteps.
Fuck.

The First Rule
of Fright Club
—Hudson—
Fuck, fuck, fuck! I’ve really cocked this up royally, haven’t I?
I can’t believe I was so busy listening to Grace’s heartbeat, lost in the rhythm of her breathing, that I let a threat sneak up on us.
“Is it the queen’s army?” Grace whispers.
She sounds so worried—but also so trusting—that I want to tear these people apart and burn the entire place to the ground, just because I can. But I’m smart enough to know that I shouldn’t pick a fight until I know what we’re really up against. So far, the footsteps don’t sound like an army, but there could still be more soldiers moving into position.
“I don’t know,” I tell her, and I fucking hate to say that to her. Almost as much as I hate that I got her into this.
Yeah, we decided to do this together, but I still feel responsible. This was my plan, so I’ve got to find a way to get us out—one that won’t end up with her or Smokey getting hurt. I should have predicted they’d know we’d likely head to Adarie, should have been more mindful of looking for signs of danger.
But we don’t have time for me to worry about what I should have done. I need to focus on getting Grace and Smokey to safety—or teaching the Shadow Queen exactly what happens when you pick a fight with a vampire.
