Because as hard as this is for me to comprehend, now that we’re in this cave and out of the sun, the only remaining reason Hudson won’t feed from me is that he doesn’t believe I genuinely want him to take what I’m offering. That I’m not feeling forced into it because he might die—although, if that were the case anyway, what the fuck, Hudson Vega.

Regardless, I lift my chin. This boy needs to know I know my own mind. If he still chooses to not feed from me with my consent assured, well, that’s on him, at least.

So I pull the pocketknife out of the backpack.

Open it up.

Slice a tiny cut in my index finger—just big enough for a few drops of blood to squeeze through.

And then I wait.

Tastes Like
Teen Spirit
—Hudson—

I smell the blood before I realize what Grace has done. At first, I think she’s injured herself, and I push to my feet, looking for the threat. Wanting to make sure she’s okay.

But then I see her sitting there, her hand in her lap. And I know.

“You shouldn’t have done that,” I tell her, even as her scent permeates the room around me. More cinnamon, combined with the warmth of honey and the freshness of the sweet summer wind.

It’s irresistible—she’s irresistible. But the hunger inside me grows and grows until it consumes me, burning, aching, raging through my bloodstream. Slaking it is all I can think about. With Grace. Only with Grace.

“I wanted to,” she whispers.

“I don’t want to hurt you.” I shove my trembling hands into my pockets and take a step back in a futile effort to put distance between us. My voice is rough as sandpaper as I admit, “I’m too hungry, Grace. I don’t think I can control myself right now.”

“You’re always in control,” she says. And then she’s on her feet, too. Walking toward me. “I’ve learned that about you in the last year. And I know you won’t hurt me.”

“You can’t know that.” I tell myself to take a step back, to walk away. To go as far from here—from Grace—as I can get.

But I don’t move. I can’t. Not when everything inside me is yearning toward her. Needing her blood, but more. Needing her, specifically, in a way I told myself that I would never need anyone.

“It’s okay, Hudson.” Her voice is soft, soothing, and I feel myself sinking into it despite my best intentions. “I trust you not to go too far.”

My fangs explode at her words. “You shouldn’t. I’m the bad brother, remember?”

It’s a test, a last-ditch effort to scare her away.
