By the time Tiola drops me off with her mom, I’m irrationally pissed and grateful he’s heading far away from me for a bit. How dare he be so happy that we’re stuck in this purple-on-purple world?
I know his life has been shit. I know this probably all seems like a much better future for him than he ever had back home. I get it.
Doesn’t mean I can’t be upset he’s clearly just accepted we’re never going home without a care in the world while I’m over here fighting to not pass out. I latch on to my anger and take a deep breath, exhaling on the most long-suffering sigh I’ve probably ever uttered.
Hudson must hear, because he tosses a questioning look at me over his shoulder. I roll my eyes at him, a clear indication I am not in the mood to discuss my irrational snit, which he thankfully takes as the hint it is, because he shrugs and keeps following Tiola.
“I hope the tago pees on him,” I mutter under my breath, then widen my gaze as I finally take in Maroly’s “garden.”

A Not So
Savage Garden
—Grace—
Tiola wasn’t exaggerating when she said her mom grew a lot of different things.
The garden is huge—so huge that it could be mistaken for another field of crops, except for the fact that so many different things are obviously being grown here. In one section, there is a huge tangle of vines growing together, with large round and squarish fruit growing off them. All purple of course.
I wonder which ones are the melons I had for breakfast as I make my way past a section filled with nothing but leaves poking out of the ground next to another section with giant leaves curling into individual stalks at least two feet tall.
“Grace!” Maroly waves to me from the other end of the garden where she’s on her knees. “What are you doing out here?”
I cross the distance between us at a jog. “I thought I’d come see if you needed help. What can I do?”
“Oh, you don’t have to do that,” she tells me. “Tuesdays I spend all morning in the garden, fertilizing and pulling weeds.”
“I can pull weeds with the best of them,” I tell her. “It used to be my job in my mom’s herb garden.”
“Okay, if you insist.” She smiles at me. “Thank you.”
I join her on the ground and start yanking a couple weeds out of the ground by their roots.
“We live so far from the closest villages that it’s impossible for me to shop with any regularity,” Maroly says as we work together. “So our garden is pretty much a necessity, which is why I grow so many things.”
