We’re high up enough now that the ground seems way too far away. I don’t know how far, since I can’t see in the dark, but that just makes free-falling like this worse.
Fuck. Just fuck. Somehow I’m back between the dragon and the ground, and this time the ground is definitely going to win.
Except something hard slams into my back just as the ground comes into view. Dragon? But then Hudson is wrapping himself over and around me, covering up as much of me as he can.
I have one second to figure out what he’s doing before we hit the ground with a force that shakes me all the way to my bones. And then we’re rolling, rolling, rolling.
By the time we finally come to a stop, with Hudson on the bottom and me on the top—my back to his front—I’ve had the breath knocked out of me completely. And so has he, judging by the fact that his chest isn’t rising beneath me, and he hasn’t said a word.
I have to say, a speechless, breathless Hudson is something I’ve prayed for a lot over the last year, but never did I think it would happen like this. And that I would be so anxious for it to pass.
Willing my body to relax even as I can hear the dragon’s giant wings flapping above us, I finally manage to draw a couple of breaths. As soon as I do, I roll over and start pushing at Hudson. “Come on, come on! We have to move!” I gasp, trying to stand and pull him up at the same time.
“On it,” he gasps right back as we finally manage to stumble to our feet.
“Where is he?” I ask, looking overhead for some sign of the giant beast.
Hudson doesn’t need to answer as the dragon immediately comes into view. He’s flying straight for us, fire streaming from his mouth.
“Run!” I shout, but before we can so much as turn, the dragon disappears right in front of us.
“Bloody hell!” Hudson curses, looking around wildly.
“Where is he?” I ask again, and I’m looking, too. The only problem is it’s still so dark that I can’t tell where he went.
“Hell if I know,” Hudson mutters, and I realize I didn’t just lose sight of him because I can’t see in the dark. The dragon actually disappeared.
“We should run,” I tell him as a fresh wave of fear slams through me.
He gives me a “no shit” look, but before I can return the favor, the dragon reappears—on the ground right in front of us.
