“Hold on!” he growls.

“That wasn’t on purpose,” I growl back, thankful when the feeling comes back in my arm as I straighten up and un-pinch whatever nerve had been jabbed for a second.

He just laughs in response, and I swear to God, he doesn’t even sound scared. He sounds…exhilarated, like outrunning a dragon is one of the most fun things he’s ever done.

Then again, after reading those journals, part of me wonders if it actually is. The thought is so horrible that I try to banish it as soon as it occurs to me, but it’s too late. It’s already moved in and now it’s there, in the back of my head, even as I plaster myself even more tightly to his back. At this point, every inch counts.

Sure enough, the dragon swoops in for another grab.

Instead of ducking this time, Hudson weaves sharply to the right. The dragon screams his annoyance into the endless night and makes yet another try for us.

Hudson goes right again, and the dragon’s claws miss my back. They do get tangled in my curls, however, and as Hudson surges forward, I swear I lose a whole fistful of hair.

The back of my head is throbbing almost as badly as my back now, and I’m beginning to think Hudson really has the better end of this deal. Sure, he needs to be the one on the bottom because he’s the only one of us who actually has a chance of outrunning this damn dragon, but at the same time, I’m not actually enjoying my current role as human shield.

I open my mouth to tell Hudson as much, but before I can get out more than a, “Hey,” the dragon drops low again.

And this time, Hudson doesn’t manage to weave in time.

You’re Dragon
Me Down
—Grace—

I scream as the beast wraps his talons around my arms. Somehow, his nails scrape against my skin as he grabs me, but they don’t actually pierce through anything important, something I’m intensely grateful for as the dragon once again starts to climb.

Up until this point, I’ve been holding on to Hudson as tightly as I can, but as the dragon grabs me, I know I’ve got two choices. Keep holding on to Hudson and let him die with me. Or let him go and give him a halfway decent chance at escape.

I let go—the last thing I want is for anyone else to suffer whatever fate this dragon has planned for me—but that doesn’t mean Hudson does. He still has his arms wrapped over my legs, helping to hold me to his back.
