I glance around again at the space we’re trapped in, a space that is clearly more his than mine. “You made this room, but I can control it, which means…”
But Hudson doesn’t so much as blink. Instead, he just raises his brows. And waits for me to speak.
And waits.
And waits.
And waits.
Silence presses between us, but for once I don’t feel honor bound to break the silence. Not when my mind is still racing with the implications of what I’ve finally come to accept.
So I wait until Hudson sighs, looking for all the world like a teacher trying to get the right answer from a recalcitrant student. “And?” he prompts.
I’ve never considered myself bratty in my life, but perhaps in this moment—on this subject—that’s exactly what I’ve been. I think back to the journal entry I read today, to the little boy who was so determined to do right by his brother, his tutor, his people.
I don’t know where things went wrong. I don’t know how or when that earnest little boy turned into a guy who could make people kill each other with just a whisper.
But I do know that somewhere deep inside this Hudson, that little boy still exists. I saw him for just a moment last night, when I was trying to patch up his back. And I saw him again today, standing outside Miss Velma’s store, eating an oatmeal raisin cookie that, for all intents and purposes, should have made him sick.
And if he was there for those moments, he’s probably there at other times, too. Like right now, watching me with those blue, blue eyes as he waits for me to catch up. Waits for me to take a giant leap of faith.
And while a leap is out of the freaking question—this is Hudson Vega, after all—I decide that maybe, just maybe, I can take a tiny little hop.
Which is the only reason I pull in a deep breath and then let it out slowly.
The only reason I unclench my fists and open my posture.
The only reason I reach deep inside myself and say the one thing I never thought I’d say. The one thing I’m more terrified of than any other.
“I really want to get out of here. And the only way I can see that happening is if we work together.”
Hudson’s grin flashes for a moment, transforming his whole face. “I thought you’d never ask.”
