And if I happen to get impatient a few times during the day, I don’t let Hudson see it. It’s not his fault he had to eat—all living things do. Besides, Hudson says it will only slow us down about thirty-six hours, not a week like the overly cautious Jaxon once told me. By tomorrow evening, he should be able to be out in sunlight again, and we can head straight for the top of the mountain.
Then it’s down to Adarie, where please, please, please someone will be able to help us figure out our next move.
We haven’t talked about it, but I know Hudson is as concerned about the Shadow Queen discovering us as I still am. She does not sound like someone we want to mess with at all. Best to get to Adarie and ask for sanctuary.
After that, what our lives might look like… Well, I just don’t let myself think about that for now. I’ve accepted that this is my new home, but that doesn’t mean I’m exactly excited to embrace it yet.
After a dinner of granola bars and westeberries—turns out Smokey is a huge fan of the heart-shaped purple berries—the small shadow curls up by the fire and goes to sleep.
After my multiple trips back and forth to the stream, I’m more than a little tired myself. But Hudson’s been trapped in a cave all day, riding high from a fresh infusion of blood. To be honest, it’s a miracle he’s not bouncing off the walls.
Which is why I’m not the least surprised when he settles down next to me on the blanket and says, “Tell me your favorite memory.”

If I Could F(lie)
—Hudson—
“I’m pretty sure you’ve seen them all,” Grace tells me with a snarky look.
“Not all of them,” I answer. “Besides, how would I know which one was your favorite? It’s not like they came with blinking lights attached, telling me which ones to pick and which ones to avoid.”
She shrugs but doesn’t say anything for a long time. Instead, she stares into the fire, and it feels like she’s a million miles away.
I’m just about to give up and go to bed when she whispers, “I didn’t like it when you looked at my memories.”
Shite. I didn’t know we were going to go there tonight. “I know,” I answer quietly.
“So why’d you do it?” she asks, her voice more resigned than anything.
“Because I’m an arse, obviously. And…” I sigh, run an agitated hand through my hair. “Because I didn’t like it when you read my journals.”
“Yeah.” She blows out a long breath, shoots me a rueful look. “That was pretty shitty on my part, wasn’t it?”
