I grit my teeth and fade toward her, determined to get to her before she can shoot fire at him. She’s not having it, though, flames spewing out of her mouth as her powerful wings bring her closer and closer to the mayor. Grace is already in the air, flying straight for Asuga in an attempt to deflect her while I fade full-out toward Souil.
But I still don’t think either of us is going to make it before the fire touches him.
I lay on a little bit more speed and—
Out of what seems like nowhere, Gillie jumps in front of the mayor and takes the powerful blast of fire meant for him.

Where the Wild
Things Really Are
—Grace—
Gillie screams when the flames hit her, and I try to reach her. I swear to God, I try. But Hudson jumps up and grabs me, pulling me out of the air.
“It’s still dragon fire,” he tells me as we hit the ground. “Which no one can survive. If we could save her, I’d do it in an instant. But it’s too late.”
I know he’s right, can see that Gillie’s already gone limp. But it doesn’t make standing here any easier to bear. And then she’s gone.
Tears roll down my face as the same wolves who put out the gazebo fire race toward her. And it feels like we should do something, feels like we should pay our respects somehow. But the dragon is circling around again, and Souil is getting closer to the wall.
Caoimhe and Lumi start chasing after him, but every time they get close, Souil blinks somewhere else. Plus, he’s got that damn disco ball weapon of his, and he’s swinging it around his head in obvious warning.
For a second, all I can see is Orebon moments before Souil murdered him. I scream despite myself as Hudson and I race toward our friends.
There’s a shimmer of light as Souil lowers his shields—just long enough to swing the weapon straight at Caoimhe’s head, and my heart is pounding in my throat. Thank God, she goes low at the last second, throwing herself at Souil and tackling him much the way Hudson did a couple of minutes ago. At the same time, Lumi raises the club he’s been carrying. But right before his swing connects with Souil’s head, the mayor flashes three feet away again.
And Lumi—who is definitely swinging for the fences—barely misses connecting the club with Caoimhe’s head.
At just that moment, Saniya comes out of the darkness with her sword raised. Unfortunately, Souil flashes up his shield, and her sword bounces off uselessly.
