The air between us turns tinder dry, and I know that any move on my part will be the match that burns it all to the ground.

But then Hudson takes a breath, and the predator fades away.

He takes a step back, and then another, until I can no longer feel the waves of heat rolling off his body.

I have no time to mourn the loss before his gaze centers on something over my right shoulder and he says smoothly, “And you must be the mayor.”

Café Lotta Say

—Hudson—

Bollocks.

I just walked onto a stage, in front of hundreds of strangers…willingly. And then, because the embarrassment factor needed to be at some monster fucking level, I didn’t just sing any song. I picked a love song. Grace’s favorite love song, in fact.

And then I sang it to her.

Like an absolute tosser.

When I’d walked offstage, my heart pounding and hands shaking, it took everything in me not to fade to the nearest bathroom and lose the bottle of water I’d regretted drinking earlier.

But then Grace had hugged me and fuck, I let myself hope.

Let myself want.

Then she’d teased she wasn’t wearing panties…and the whole room disappeared. Just fucking fell away. In the space between one heartbeat and the next, a raging fire burned through all the oxygen in the room.

And I let myself need someone more than I needed my next breath.

So of course that wanker of a mayor decided now is the perfect time for a chitchat.

If we didn’t need his permission to remain safely in Adarie, I’d scoop Grace into my arms and fade back to our room so fast, he’d question whether we’d ever even been here.

“I am indeed,” the mayor says, raising his voice to be heard over the surprisingly spirited flute duel going on onstage. “Let’s walk, shall we?”

I start to tell him no, but something about the way he’s watching me tells me that’s not an option. So I reach over and take Grace’s hand and together we follow the mayor out of the park, with Smokey toddling along behind us.

I don’t know where I expect him to take us, but a little bakery/coffee shop isn’t it. However, as soon as we step into the sweet-smelling place with its twisted iron ice-cream shop chairs and tiny round tables, I relax just a little bit. It’s doubtful the mayor would choose this place for an intense interrogation.

The mayor waves to the clerk behind the register, a woman with short purple hair, and leads us to a small pink table in the back. The clerk dashes over with some yellow cups filled with water and a tray of dainty desserts, served inside a giant swan pastry.

“What do you think he wants?” Grace whispers to me.
