Lifting her up—which is no easy feat considering she’s kicking and hitting and squirming like a pissed-off toddler—I use every ounce of strength I have inside me, and I throw her as hard as I possibly can.
I throw her so hard that my arm hurts, so hard that my back and my spleen and my everything hurts. But I don’t give a shit. Because it works.
The Shadow Queen, nightmarish hag that she is, goes soaring across the town square.
She goes flying over the shops at the edge of the square.
She goes flying over the streets behind the town square.
And then she goes flying over that goddamn wall that Souil put up to make Adarie seem like a sanctuary city. As fucking if.
If this is what he calls sanctuary, I’d rather take my chances in hell.

It’s Not Even
My Third Rodeo
—Hudson—
Turns out hell can be arranged, because I’ve no sooner done away with that shadow bitch than I turn and see Grace locked in mortal combat with Asuga.
Grace is under the dragon’s chest at the moment, plastered against her with her arms wrapped around the dragon’s neck. Asuga, on the other hand, is screaming her head off and belching flames as she spins and spins in an effort to shake Grace off.
On the plus side, the flames can’t reach Grace because she’s beneath them. On the negative side, her arms don’t reach all the way around Asuga’s neck, and I’m pretty sure she’s going to fall at any second—directly into the line of fire.
I take off running, fading as fast as I can without a spleen or feeling in my feet, really, toward the clock tower side of town square, which is where the two of them are. As I do, the dragon lets out another high-pitched scream and I realize she must notice what I do—dawn is breaking. She’s running out of time, and so are we.
Grace has her arms as far around the dragon’s neck as they can go, while the dragon spins and spins in an effort to knock Grace off her back. But Grace isn’t letting go.
Instead, she’s hanging on for dear life, as she does her best to—I think—strangle the life out of the dragon. Of course, it’s not working, because her arms don’t reach all the way around the dragon’s neck, plus it’s really freaking hard to strangle a dragon, even if your arms do reach all the way.
I’m almost there when the dragon gets completely fed up with her unwelcome passenger. She stops spinning and starts thrashing hard enough to give herself whiplash—and more than hard enough to send Grace tumbling into the night.
