“I’m aware. Once we get into the mountains, I’m sure there’ll be some wildlife or something I can drink from. It’ll be fine.” He doesn’t sound enthused, and I don’t blame him. Drinking from some wild animal we just happen upon probably sounds as appetizing to him as eating it sounds to me.
But desperate times, desperate measures, or so they say. At least Hudson acknowledges the problem and understands that we have to deal with it. That’s what matters.
“You ready to go?” Hudson asks as he picks up his discarded water bottle from earlier.
“Yeah. Do you want me to walk for a while?”
He glances up at the mountains looming in front of us, large and deep purple and intimidating as fuck, then back at me with a small smirk on his face.
And I get it. I really do. Even a non-hiker like me can tell these mountains have a lot of sheer rock faces that need to be climbed and not hiked. And considering we have absolutely no climbing gear, I’m at least ninety percent certain I’ll die in the first hour.
But I’m still willing to give it a try—especially if Hudson is on the bottom to catch me when I fall, which I have absolutely no doubt that he will do. Probably more than once.
“Don’t worry about it, Grace,” he says after a second. “I’m not going to collapse on you quite yet.”
“I’m glad to hear that,” I answer dryly. “Considering if you do, we’re both falling off the side of this mountain.”
“Haven’t you heard? It’s not the fall that will kill you. It’s the—”
“Bounce,” I say at the same time. “Yeah, I never really bought that.”
He laughs. “Me either, actually.” Then he squats down. “Your chariot, my lady?”
“Only you would refer to yourself as a chariot,” I say with a snort as I throw the pack on my back and climb on.
“What should I refer to myself as?” he asks mildly. “A Ferrari?”
I crack up as I wrap my arms and legs around him—and ignore the way my hip flexors are protesting another several hours in this position. Not nearly as much as they’ll be protesting after I slide down the mountain a time or ten, but still. They aren’t happy. At all.
“Now what?” I ask once I’m as secure as I’m going to get.
“Now we climb a mountain,” Hudson says. And proceeds to do just that.

Got Nothing on Me
—Hudson—
As I start to climb what feels like yet another rock wall in an endless stream of them, I finally admit to myself that I’ve never been this tired in my whole life.
