Today I saw the most amazing invention. It was incredible.

A telephone.

It’s a device with a knob-like object to listen from and another to hold in your hands and speak into. There’s a cable that connects the contraption to the wall, and Richard says the cables go all over the city and connect to other homes.

I asked him what you do with it, and he said you can talk to anyone anywhere they are as long as you both have a device, too! Imagine that!

I begged him to let me try it, but Father walked in and demanded to know why I wasn’t in the training yard. For the first time, I thought about giving him exactly what he wants. A demonstration of my powers. Maybe he’d stop making me Transcend.

Maybe I wouldn’t only get one day a month to note how the world is changing while I stay trapped in that dark crypt.

But I glanced back at the telephone before heading out to the training area and knew it wasn’t worth it. I’d shown Father what I could do one time, when he’d taken Jaxon from me, and ever since, he’s not stopped dreaming up new ways to torture the power out of me again.

If he knew the other thing I could do…he’d never let me go. Ever.

Besides, who did I have to call anyway?

Re-Tweeting

—Grace—

As I finish the journal entry, I can’t stop myself from looking over at Hudson. He’s currently draped over the chair in front of the TV, playing Demon’s Souls. But after eight weeks of alternating between that and Call of Duty, he doesn’t seem that into it.

Maybe that’s why he chooses this exact moment to turn his head and look back at me. Our gazes lock, and for a second, he looks inquisitive.

But then his gaze drops to the journal in my lap, and his whole face closes up. Anger flares briefly in his eyes, but then they go blank. And we’re left staring at each other—me caught between the sweet boy he used to be and the obnoxious guy he is now and him…who the hell knows where he is. Nowhere good, from the look of it.

After a minute, he goes back to his game. But it turns out, that’s only to shut it off. Then he’s standing up and stretching, like he’s getting ready to throw axes or do his daily round of five hundred push-ups.

Instead of reaching for his axes, though, he looks straight at me. Raises one dark brow. And lets out the most bizarre sound I have ever heard.

It’s earsplitting and terrible and like nothing I’ve ever heard before. I stare at him, shocked, as he does it again. And again. And again.
