I stop rolling just in time to see her fall backward and hit the ground, feet in the air. She’s so dazed, I can practically see the little cartoon birdies circling around her head, and I know that now is the time to move in for the kill. If I had a clue how I was supposed to do that…
But before I can even take a step toward her, Orebon calls my name. I turn to look and find that the smaller dragon has picked Hudson up and has him in his claws. Even worse, he’s flying up, up, up, and I have a sick feeling I know what’s coming.
I look to the troubadours for help, but as the dragon on the ground moves to come around, they all take off in different directions. Which I get—they’ve got no extra powers to deal with the thing, but still. Being abandoned sucks.
Hudson’s already survived one fall tonight, plus being slammed into a giant wall. I don’t know if he can survive a second, especially from the height this dragon is climbing to. Which means someone has to go after them. And since I’m the only one with wings…
I take a deep breath, check to make sure my wings are actually working on command and not just when they want to. Then mutter, “Here goes nothing,” as I take a running jump off the stairs and pray that this isn’t a complete and utter disaster.

Feather or Not,
Here I Come!
—Grace—
“Grace, no!” Hudson yells. “You’re made of stone! You can’t fly—”
Well, shit, that would have been nice to know about two seconds ago…
I start to fall—fast. I squeeze my eyes shut because I don’t want to see the ground coming—except, somehow, I’m not falling anymore. And I’m not made of stone, either.
I’m still not me—a quick glance down at my silvery hands proves that, as does the fact that I have wings—but I’m not solid stone anymore. Which does not, under any circumstances, mean I can fly decently. Because I absolutely cannot. I’m in no danger of hitting the ground anymore, but getting my wings to do what I want them to do is another story entirely.
I’m wobbly and can’t fly in a straight line to save my life.
Every couple of flaps of my wings, I go sideways or down or straight—anywhere but where I want to go, which is a diagonal line straight at Hudson, who the dragon is still carrying higher. And higher. And higher.
