“Sure I can,” he answers, winking over his shoulder at me. “A guy has to have a dream, doesn’t he?”
I start to laugh, but then my eyes meet his dark-blue ones, and the laugh sticks in my throat. As does the breath I just took. Because suddenly we’re right back in that cave, my hand in his hand, my vein in his mouth.
This time I don’t try to explain away the feelings bouncing around inside me. I don’t try to pretend I’m not having them, either. I just stay where I am, gaze locked on Hudson’s, and wonder.
Wonder what it will feel like when he does it again.
Wonder if he’ll drink from my wrist next time…or somewhere else.
Wonder what I taste like to him.
I don’t realize I’ve said the last one aloud until Hudson’s eyes darken. Then he turns toward me fully and whispers, “Delicious. Like the best thing I’ve ever tasted. Like—” He breaks off, takes a deep breath. Then gives a rueful smile and says, “You taste good, Grace. Really good.”
I know it’s not what he was about to say, and I would give anything to know what his original thought was. But I don’t tell him everything. It’s hypocritical to expect him to do any different. No matter how much I want him to.
No matter how much I need to know what he’s thinking.
I almost ask. But before I can work up the nerve, Hudson smiles and holds out a hand to me. “It’s nearly eleven. Want to go grab some lunch?”
I almost say no, almost tell him I want to stay right here and let him have breakfast instead. But that isn’t what anyone would call the prudent thing right now. So instead, I just nod and put my hand in his. And wait for whatever comes next.

Gone Wishin’
—Grace—
By the time we get back down to the street, it’s bustling with people, and I’m excited to see that there are more than just wraiths in Adarie. I don’t see any humans yet, but Hudson points out another vampire laughing up into the eyes of a tall, waiflike person with green skin so pale, it almost looks translucent.
There is a pack of werewolves dining at an outdoor patio—raw steak and boiled eggs, of course—and a real chupacabra, Hudson insists, who’s buying a bouquet of purple daisies from a flower cart.
