Except I wasn’t fast enough. I know that, even as I ignore the pain that’s in every part of my body, and pull on all the strength I have. I’m not going to get to her in time.
But I have to try.
I lay on an extra burst of speed, aim straight for the dragon, but I’m still twenty-five feet out when he sends a spray of fire straight at Grace.
“No!” I scream, the words torn from my soul.
She doesn’t move and neither does the dragon, who keeps up a steady stream of fire aimed right at her.
I’m there now, though, and I hit him in the side with every ounce of power I’ve got. It works, too. The hit to his already wounded neck area knocks him sideways, has his screeches of pain and annoyance filling the night sky around us.
He turns on me and I’m trembling, terrified in a way I’ve never been before. Not of this damn dragon but of turning around and seeing what’s become of Grace. My Grace.
But ignorance isn’t bliss—it never has been for me—and I have to know.
So I turn, expecting the worst and yet totally unprepared for it at the same time. And there she is—Grace, but not.
At first, I think he’s burned her so badly that he’s turned her to ash right in front of me. My stomach clenches, my knees shake, and rage like I have never known wells up inside me. Rage and hate and agony—so much agony that I don’t know what to do with it. I definitely don’t know how to contain it.
It bursts out of me like a supernova, a wave of energy so intense, it’s sure to destroy everything in its path. Then it just as quickly becomes a black hole. A pit of despair so violent, so empty, that it can swallow this world and any other it comes across. It sure as shit can take down one fucking dragon.
It’s with that thought in mind that I turn back to the dragon, determined to annihilate him no matter the cost. But I’ve barely taken one step away from Grace when something brushes against my hand.
I turn back to her, startled, and notice it’s her fingers that are brushing against mine. Except not exactly her fingers. Stone replicas of them.
Not ash, I realize as I gaze at her. As our fingers meet and join. Stone.
Grace is stone. And not stone as in a statue, either. This Grace, who is somehow—incomprehensibly—made of stone, is also somehow—incomprehensibly—alive.
