The memory that was tickling the back of my mind stirs to full-blown life as the stories Richard told me all those years ago come roaring back in full color. Or should I say, full purple.
“Yes.” Maroly adds salad to her plate and then passes it to her daughter. “You’re in what I believe you call the Shadow Realm—Noromar to us. Rumor has it there’s a doorway between our two worlds that opens once every thousand years, but it’s never happened in our lifetime. We always think of it as more myth than truth. You know, something to dream about but not real. So, honestly, I have no idea how you got here. Or how—” She breaks off, exchanging a long look with Arnst.
It doesn’t take a genius to know what she was going to say, though. If the doorway opened to let us through—or even if we just somehow managed to slip through—lightning doesn’t strike twice. Which means—
“There’s no way for us to ever get back?” Grace’s voice breaks on the last word, but her whisper still echoes through the room like a shout.

“We don’t know,” Arnst says solemnly. “My family’s lived here on the outskirts of the realm for seventy-five years, and we’ve never heard of such a thing happening.”
“But maybe if you get over the mountains, farther into the realm to one of the villages,” Maroly hastens to add, “you’ll find someone who knows more about this.”
“Someone like who?” Grace asks, and her voice still isn’t back to normal.
“The Shadow Queen,” I answer, and Maroly gasps.
“How do you know of our queen?” Arnst asks, and everyone seems to lean a little bit farther away from the table, as if afraid of what I might say next.
I shrug. “Honestly, I don’t really know much of anything about her. My tutor used to tell me tales of Noromar when I was young, but I always thought he’d made the place up to amuse me on long, lonely nights.”
I glance at Grace, just to see how she’s doing. She seems to be holding her own on the panic-attack front, but her face is paler than I’ve ever seen it.
