Of course, what picking myself up looked like varied depending on the situation and what it was that had made me cry.

Sometimes, I had to find a solution.

Sometimes, I had to get my scraped knee or cut arm taken care of.

And sometimes…sometimes I just had to suck it up and accept that life isn’t always fair, and there’s nothing we can do about that fact. Those were the times I hated most of all, and today—right now—is definitely one of those.

But rules are rules, and my ten minutes are up.

So I climb to my feet.

Wash my face.

Take a deep breath.

And tell myself that I can do whatever needs doing. Even if what needs doing is kicking the ass of a two-hundred-year-old vampire with a personality disorder. It may not be easy and it may not be pretty, but—one way or another—I can find a way to get it done.

The thought makes me feel better, or at least steadier, as I make my way back into the main room. Until I get my first look at Hudson, who is watching me with a look in his eyes that can only be described as “gleeful.”

Which, when it comes to him, is never a look I want to be on the receiving end of. And yet here it is. Panic hits me even before he says, “New plan, Princess.”

“Oh yeah?” I shoot him a skeptical look. “What exactly do you have in mind?”

“Instead of convincing you I’m a decent person, as you so helpfully suggested, I’m going to take the low road instead.”

Well that sounds…terrifying.

Swallowing down the instinctive fear, I cross to the bookcases and stand with my back against the biggest one. Just in case.

Then I give him my best “tell me something I don’t know” look. And answer, “Here I thought you already were.”

He returns my look with one of his own—only his says, You haven’t seen anything yet.

And, as if to prove it, he reaches over and flips on the state-of-the-art stereo he’s got taking up a whole lot of space in the media area of the room. The second he does, Guns N’ Roses’ “Welcome to the Jungle” comes blaring through the speakers so loudly that the windows rattle—right along with my brain.

Welcome to
My Jungle
—Hudson—

“Are you serious right now?” Grace squawks loudly enough to be heard above the music. But it barely registers, as I’ve got my earbuds in to muffle the sound.
