But we’re also close enough for me to see something else—a grouping of four small buildings at the base of the mountain. Or four large buildings. Who can tell when they’re standing next to a fucking mountain?
Small or big, it doesn’t matter. What matters is that—hopefully—someone inhabits those buildings.
Someone who can tell us where the hell we are.
And how the fuck we can escape before we become a midnight snack for the strangest fucking dragon I’ve ever seen.

Don’t Farm It In
—Grace—
My legs feel like they’re going to fall off.
Actually, my whole body feels like it’s going to collapse, and we’re still at least a mile, maybe more, away from the buildings up ahead.
Hudson spotted them several miles back, but now that we’re close enough for me to see them, I just want to be there already.
I hope they have chairs. And a shower. And chairs.
Please God, let there be chairs.
I used to run on the beach in San Diego all the time—Coronado, La Jolla, sometimes even OB if Heather and I went to Belmont Park to ride the roller coaster and bumper cars. But running in sand—or the snow near Katmere Academy—is nothing compared to walking in this weird purple dirt.
Most of the way it’s been rocky and difficult to get a foothold, but for the last couple of miles, as we’ve gotten closer to the mountains, the soil’s been different, fine and loamy.
With every step I take, I sink into it a little, which means I also have to struggle with every step to pull myself back out of it. It’s not quicksand, but it sure feels like it could be if it spent a few extra days at the gym.
Still, letting Hudson carry me all the way there wasn’t an option. It’s one thing if we’re fleeing for our lives and my very human “slowness” is a liability. It’s another thing altogether to let some big, strong guy carry me around like I’m his personal rag doll.
Not to mention I feel awkward—like, so freaking awkward—touching Hudson right now. I did it once on this walk because I didn’t want to fall on my ass and cause more trouble, but hanging on him? Our bodies pressed together when we’re not in fear for our lives?
I don’t freaking think so.
Not after that almost kiss.
What even was that, anyway?
I’ve been thinking about it—and by thinking about it, I mean obsessing about it—nonstop since the dragon decided to leave us alone for God only knows what reason.
What was I thinking?
How could I do that?
I know the mating bond between Jaxon and me is gone.
