I fasten the bracelet around his wrist and let him kiss me. Once, twice, then again and again. But when he starts angling us toward the bed, I slap a hand against his chest and say, “Slow your roll, hot jets.”

“Hot jets?” Now he’s back to sounding offended. So, so offended.

“I’m just saying. We’ve got shit to do. We’ve got a vampire to save and a shadow queen’s ass to kick. There’s no time for anything else.”

“There’s always time for ‘anything else,’” he tells me, lips skimming down my neck in that way he has that makes me shiver.

“Not this time,” I say as I bend over and pick up my backpack. “Besides, there’s something I’ve remembered that I think you’ve forgotten from our time in the Shadow Realm.”

“My vanity?” he asks as he grabs his own backpack. “My arrogance? My jealousy?”

“No, no, and no.” I sling my backpack over my shoulder and head for the front door. “So we didn’t return to the lair because we met dragon fire. I was hit with an arrow of time magic—and now knowing that I’m the demi-god of chaos, well, that makes perfect sense why it sought me out.”

“Of course it does,” he snarks.

“Anywaaaay.” I roll my eyes. “I think you’re forgetting, though, who was hit with dragon fire—which, as you know, doesn’t kill you. It just resets your timeline.”

“Who?” he says as we walk down the stairs and let ourselves out the front door.

“Well, I’m not one hundred percent sure here, but have you considered the possibility that Smokey didn’t die? I think she just went back to a different point in time.”

Hudson freezes, his eyes going wide as his big, beautiful brain races through the theories and the possibilities. “Do you think?” he asks after a minute. I can’t help noticing his hands are shaking again.

“I do,” I tell him. “I really do. And I think we should pack some glitter ribbons, just in case.”

“Fuck.” He shakes his head. “I love you, Grace.”

“I love you, too.” I smile at him. “So let’s go save Mekhi and kick that creepy bitch’s ass up and down the Shadow Realm.”

I reach down, intertwine my fingers in his, and add, “And let’s go get our Smokey back.”

Writing a long-running series, especially a prequel with time travel in it, is a lot of fun, but it isn’t always easy, so I have to start by thanking the two women who even made it possible: Liz Pelletier and Emily Sylvan Kim.
