She cracks up, and so do I a few beats later. Which is good because it helps me convince myself that I’m fully recovered from that hug…right up until Grace opens the bathroom door and walks out in the red dress.
Which is when it hits me that no matter how hard I try, I’m never going to recover from this girl.

Starfalling for You
—Hudson—
Smokey is completely oblivious to the tension that has suddenly crept up between Grace and me. She takes one look at Grace and grabs onto her, then begins to pull/drag her toward the door.
“Hold on! I need my shoes, Smokey!”
The shadow yowls in impatience, but Grace just laughs. It makes my chest tighten to see them both getting along better. “One minute more, I promise.”
She’s as good as her word, and we’re out the door moments later, even though she’s being extra careful not to touch—or even look at—me.
The sun is just beginning its very slow descent as we reach the end of the inn’s hallway, and I’ve never been so happy to see a sunset in my whole bloody life. I didn’t realize how much my body craved the dark until it had to go more than two months without it.
Then again, it might be Grace’s blood I crave and not the dark at all.
Stopping myself from drinking from her every day has been excruciating. Not because I’m starving but because I’m dying to taste her again. To have the sweet and spicy heat of her linger on my tongue.
“Hudson, look!” she breathes as she gazes out at the sky. “Isn’t it beautiful?”
“So beautiful,” I agree.
She glances up at me and her breath catches in her throat. But her voice is casual when she teases, “You aren’t even looking at the sky.”
I start to tell her I’m looking at something even more beautiful, but the line is so fucking cheesy, I just let it die. I need to hold on to some small shred of pride, after all.
“It’s a sky. I’ve seen one before,” I say instead.
“You are sooooo unromantic.” She rolls her eyes as she reaches out to grab the stair railing. “Come on, let’s go see the party.”
“Baby, I am the party,” I say as we reach the lobby landing.
“You and your Versace underpants.”
“Um, I believe the correct term is ‘boxer briefs.’ And for someone who claims she doesn’t like me, you certainly are obsessed with my underwear.”
Grace turns to face me. “That’s not true.”
“Sure it is.” I lift a brow. “I’m pretty sure you spend more time thinking about my former underwear than I do.”
