I’m only going to get one chance at this, though, so I have to make sure we don’t drop too early or too late. At this point, I honestly think our best bet is one of the tents set up around the square. I just need it to break our fall a little bit and I should be able to get Lumi on the ground without too much damage.
But I have to make sure I can get the dragon’s talons open at just the right moment. And considering last time I had a fuck of a time, this could end really badly.
Plus, to pry them open, I need both hands, and right now my hands are the only things keeping me from falling out of the air. Well, my hands and Lumi, who still has a death grip around my wrist.
The dragon’s coming around to the town square again, finally, which means I have to figure this out fast. I only hope Grace doesn’t decide to try to come and rescue me. The last thing I need is the dragon taking a piece of her or setting her on fire if Grace isn’t in her solid stone form. If that happens, I’m afraid I’ll burn the whole fucking village to the ground just for a chance to get this damn dragon.
I start to inch my hand over on the talon to the dragon’s knuckles when I happen to spot Lumi’s dagger in the sheath around his waist. Grace and I encouraged everyone to take a sword—or two—for this battle, but Lumi had insisted his dagger was the only weapon he needed.
At the time, I thought he was being shortsighted, but here, now, I’ve never been more grateful for someone’s stubbornness in my life. Because that dagger is going to save our fucking lives.
As she gets closer to the part of the square where the tents are—and fires still rage—the dragon starts to go faster. Knowing I’m about to miss my opportunity, and not sure my blood-slicked hand is going to be up for another spin around the village, I yell to Lumi to hold on to my wrist as tightly as he can.
Which leaves me with only one thing to do in this situation. I take a bloody huge leap of faith and hope I land somewhere that won’t kill the both of us.

After spending the last five minutes holding on for dear life, it takes a couple of seconds to convince my brain to let go. When I finally manage it, I lever myself up and snag the dagger off Lumi’s belt.
