“Even if I can sing, I don’t know any of your tunes,” I point out reasonably. “It’s probably best that we just say I have a throat infection as well.”

But then Grace turns to me, mischief gleaming in her eyes. “Oh, I definitely think you should sing, Hudson. Something swoony and romantic, don’t you think?”

She is taking the piss, and I probably deserve it after counting rocks when they asked if she could sing. Still, I’m not a fan of embarrassing myself in front of strangers.

“Maybe I could just play the guitar or something,” I suggest. See, I tell her with a look, I am capable of being a team player.

Grace’s eyes widen. “You play the guitar?”

“Is that so hard to believe?” I cock one brow.

“I don’t know. I mean, Jaxon had guitars and a drum set in his tower, so I guess I just assumed, you know, that was his thing.” She shrugs and yeah, I can’t help it. I’m insulted.

“And what, you thought only Jaxy-Waxy has a talent for anything?” I snipe back, then turn to Caoimhe and bite out, “I can sing and play the guitar.”

The three troubadours are talking all at once, throwing out possible scenarios for how to include me in their act, but I’m not listening. I’m too busy watching Grace fight—and lose—to keep a triumphant smile from overtaking her face.

Shite. I walked right into that, didn’t I?

I narrow my gaze on the treacherous girl, promising retribution later, when something Lumi says has me spinning around.

“I absolutely will not be juggling anything.” A man has his pride, after all.

But when Grace giggles next to me, I know I’d juggle kittens if she asked me to.

I am so fucked.

Inn-stant Gratification

—Grace—

Turns out, getting through the gates of Adarie with a troubadour’s invitation is as easy as tricking Hudson into performing with them.

I’ve never sweated so much in my life as I was when the guards questioned our group.

I thought for sure a troupe with two otherworlders was going to be a hard no, but looks like Caoihme was right and it’s expected for troubadours to be an odd collection of people. She’d said it was common for traveling entertainers to band together with strangers from all over their world, and I have to admit, I kind of love this idea of creating a family from the people you meet.
