No, twenty percent was the exact right rate to convince my father that I have some power, but not too much. More importantly, it’s the right amount to make sure he decides that I’m nowhere near ready to be unleashed on the world. That his perfect plan will fail, just like I have, if he races to execute it prematurely.

Of course, selling this as well as I have means that I can look forward to several more years of being beaten senseless by his men, trying to force powers that I already have to mature. And while I’d do almost anything to avoid a right proper beating by one of his shite soldiers, I’m not about to take the easy way out at the expense of so many other people’s lives.

Que será será. Whatever will be will fucking be.

And yes, I am well aware of the fact that I’m quoting a song from a Hitchcock movie. Then again, after more than a few lifetimes of dealing with Cyrus, I’ve learned horror is always appropriate.

Sacrifices need to be made, and I’m just the guy to make them.

Besides, who doesn’t like letting a werewolf drool on them after they kick you in the nuts?

I Read You
All Wrong
—Grace—

Oh my God. OH MY GOD.

I stare at the words on the page until they become all blurry and run together. Then I blink and read them again. And again. And again.

They reverberate through my heart, burrow inside my skin to my very soul as the truth strikes home. It can’t be true. It just can’t be.

I don’t know what happened at Katmere the year Hudson died.

I don’t know why Jaxon believes what he believes.

I don’t know why everyone believes what they believe.

But it isn’t true.

I flip through the next several journal entries, reading them as quickly as I can. I read about how much Hudson hates his father, about how Cyrus has managed to recruit so many members of high-ranking paranormal families to join him. About how Hudson is determined to stop him, no matter what.

How could Jaxon have gotten it so wrong?

How could all of us have been so shortsighted?

Was Lia—Lia of all people—the only one who saw the truth?

Just the thought makes me sick, has panic setting in. What if Jaxon had just listened to Lia to begin with? Talked to his brother instead of assuming the worst? Maybe that whole big human-sacrifice montage wouldn’t have had to happen.

My stomach revolts at the memories and the might-have-beens, and I make a mad dash for the bathroom. I barely get there in time.
