I start toward him, not sure what I’m going to do but knowing I need to do something. But before I fly more than a few feet myself, Hudson goes careening right past me—which is of particular concern because I am flying, and this vampire can’t fly.

Don’t Trust Her as Far
as I Can Throw Her
—Hudson—

“Hudson!” Grace screams, flying after me as I tumble through the air.

I want to tell her I’m fine, but that last hit from Asuga knocked the wind out of me and I’ve got no breath to say anything.

Gravity finally comes into play, and I hit the ground hard, go skidding several feet across it. The only good point about the whole debacle is, when I look up at the dragon, I realize that I got her, too, and we may—just may—have a few minutes before she comes after us again.

At the moment, she’s sitting on top of one of the buildings. Or maybe “lying” is the better word, as she looks as exhausted as I feel. Blood is leaking down the roof and for a second, I think that she might be dead. But then her wings move, and I can see she’s trying to get her feet under her so she can launch herself back into the air.

She’s not having much luck, though. At least this gives me a couple of minutes to help Grace. I know I should head back over and try to finish Asuga off, but Grace and the few other people who are still standing are drowning over here. And dawn is creeping ever closer, which means Souil almost has his ticket out of town, so someone needs to be left standing to make sure he doesn’t get a chance to use it.

I head toward Grace to see what she wants to do, but before I get there, another wolf launches itself at her and takes her down again. She fights it off valiantly, but I know another one is coming. And another one. And another one after that, because the Shadow Queen is in town now, and she’s not leaving until Souil is gone and she’s freed from this cursed world.

Which means, as much as I have to fight every instinct in me not to leave my mate’s side, the only way to make this attack stop is to focus on the Shadow Queen and end this once and for all.

With that in mind, I toss a quick glance to make sure Grace is okay—she is—then fade straight across town square and slam myself into the Shadow Queen with her evil birds and bugs, her snakes and wolves.
