And I do want him. I do love him. And I’m determined that not even time itself is going to take him away from me.
When our kiss finally ends, Hudson pulls me up. He must have snagged my phone because suddenly the opening notes of Shawn Mendes’s “Fallin’ All in You” start playing.
“Dance with me?” he says, dimple in full attendance and blue eyes shining more brightly than the stars currently falling outside our window.
I give him my hand, and he sweeps me into a spin that takes us across the entire hotel room. “So is this our thing?” I ask as he dips me to the beginnings of the chorus. “Dancing to cheesy love songs?”
“I want us to have a lot of different things,” he answers as he pulls me up and spins me out, as only a crown prince who spent his life in dancing lessons can. “But yeah, if you don’t mind. I love dancing with you.”
“I love being in your arms,” I answer, and for once there’s no snark and no teasing in our tones. There’s only love and a laid-bare honesty I never would have imagined possible that first night when Hudson told me to turn on the fucking lights. “Any way that I can get here. But especially this way.”
He twirls us around again, eating up the small hotel room floor in a series of complicated steps. If dancing with me gives him even a little of the joy it brings me—I’ll dance with him forever, if he’ll have me.
But as one of my favorite Shawn Mendes songs segues into George Ezra’s slow and deep “Hold My Girl,” an urgent knock sounds on our door. Hudson and I have one moment to glance at each other in alarm before the door flies open.
Nyaz is standing there, looking more shaken than I’ve ever seen him. “Yssah’s wife must have made it to warn the Shadow Queen. Her army is at the gate. It’s go time.”

The Wheel of
Misfortune
—Grace—
My heart is beating double-time as we race down the stairs. We’d hoped the queen wouldn’t breach the gate until after sunrise in an hour, so we’re all panicked now.
“The first round of fighters are holding the queen off near the gate, at least for a bit,” Nyaz says as he’s running along right behind us. “But we need to hurry.”
“We need to get Caoimhe!” I tell Hudson as we hit the landing on the second floor hard and start down our last flight of steps.
“She’s already downstairs,” Nyaz shouts at us. “And so is Lumi.”
“Lumi?” I almost miss the bottom step as I turn to him in shock. “But the baby—”
