“Don’t you fucking dare, you bloody bastard,” I growl as he takes aim at the red tent again.

But there’s not a lot I can do from this position, except use every ounce of strength I have to dig my fingers into his sides. If I can wound him, maybe he will decide it’s not worth it to attack right now.

This time, I manage to tear through the scales. Blood courses over my hands, making them slippery—and making it a lot harder for me to hang on. Especially since the dragon starts screaming in rage, his giant body shaking and jerking in pain.

I would probably feel bad about this if he hadn’t spent every second he’s been around us trying to flame roast Grace and me. Add in the fact that my arm is currently throbbing down to the bone as I hang on and try to direct him away from killing a tent full of children, and my sympathy meter is at an all-time low.

At the last second, though, the dragon swerves away from the red tent. I don’t know what made him do it and honestly, I don’t care as long as the children are safe. But as he barrels straight toward the side of one of the big brick buildings surrounding the square, I get an inkling of what he’s about to do.

Well, shite, is all I can think before pain explodes through every inch of my body.

Dragon Me
Over the Coals
—Grace—

I make it down the clock-tower stairs just in time to see the dragon roll to his left and jam his back against the side of the giant library across from the stage—and in doing so, slam Hudson against him as well.

I scream and take off running, terror pounding through my every cell. The dragon is huge—at least as big as five SUVs back-to-back—and the building is made of brick and stone. With the speed that dragon was going when he slammed Hudson into the building, there’s no way—no way—he survived.

Please, God, let him have survived.

The dragon hangs there for a second, almost like he hit so hard he dazed himself—which definitely isn’t a good sign. I will him to move. Will him to let me see Hudson breathe. Hell, just to let me see him.

Eventually, the dragon pulls away and somehow—some way—Hudson is still on his back. He looks roughed up and definitely the worse for wear, but he’s still alive. And he’s still hanging on, something that seems to outrage the dragon beyond measure.

He’s snorting fire now.

Screaming with fury.

Bucking like a wild thing as he tries to get Hudson off of his back.
