And he’s right. If we can kill the dragon, all of this ends.
I take off as Hudson fades across the square. He’s leaping from balconies to rooftops, each jump taking him higher and higher to get to a greater vantage point to help with the dragon that is circling the square again. Luckily—or not, depending on how you want to look at it—we must reek of time rift as much as Souil, because the dragon has no issue leaving him be and coming after us instead.
But now we’ve got another problem. Because being in the air and on a rooftop means we’re perfect targets for the huge freaking shadow birds that are flying around all over the place. A giant condor-like shadow flies straight at me, claws extended like the weapons they are.
Not to mention the dragon who is slowly circling overhead, looking for an opening to shoot odd bursts of dragon fire nearby.
As the condor closes in on me, I at first think it’s trying to scare me or scratch me, but then I realize it’s so much worse.
It’s going for my eyes.
I let out another scream and dive toward the earth with this giant bird right on my ass. I’m kind of hoping if we get close enough to the ground, it will decide to go for some of the tarantulas or something—easy prey and all that. Unfortunately, the only thing it seems interested in is me.
Too bad the feeling isn’t mutual.
I dive just low enough to fake a landing, then turn around and prepare to climb in an effort to distract the bird from my sudden change in direction. But Hudson is having none of it—big surprise. He drops into a crouch on a nearby rooftop. Then launches himself straight up—and snatches the shadow bird, mid–wing flap, right out of the air.
He grabs onto its wing, and there’s a tearing sound before he sends the condor careening across the sky with such force that it slams into two other giant birds and takes them down, too.
I feel like maybe I should be upset about hurting the damn things, but then I remember they aren’t birds. They’re just shadows, giving their best Hitchcock impression—although these seem conjured by the queen more than sentient like Smokey.
Personally, I think it’s a little over-the-top, and that’s before the birds all fly into a circular formation right above the center of town square—right above Souil—and start attacking anyone who goes near him.
Add in the fact that daylight is slowly creeping across the sky, barely fifteen minutes away from Souil at best guess, and we’ve got a really serious problem. And that’s before howls and snarls fill the air.
