Instead, he’s going out of his way to make the situation as comfortable as he can for me while still giving me ownership of what we do. No one has ever done that for me, not even Jaxon, who constantly wants to protect me by making sure I change how I behave. Hudson just makes sure that I have the space and security to do what I want when I want to do it.
It makes me like him even more.
Maybe that’s why, in the space between when one song ends and another begins, I grab his hand and say, “Let’s find somewhere a little quieter to hang out. Just you and me.”

“Okay, you can open your eyes,” Hudson tells me.
“Seriously?” I say as I open my eyes and try to get my bearings. “You brought us all the way to the top?”
“Nothing but the best for you.”
“Best to push me off of, you mean?” I ask as I peer over the edge.
After convincing me to climb on his back and close my eyes, he climbed the town’s immense clock tower, and now we’re standing right behind the face of the clock.
The other three sides of the tower have a handrail which goes about to my waist and the rest of the area is open—giving us an incredible view of the lights and festival down below without most of the noise.
“How high is this thing anyway?” I ask as I risk another look over the edge, thinking Smokey might have been on to something when she refused to climb the tower with us. She’s somewhere running around down below, probably making another bouquet of flowers to give to Hudson.
He moves to stand next to me. “Twelve or thirteen stories, why?”
“No reason. Other than wondering how long it would take me to plummet to my death if I fall off this thing.”
“And people say I’m pessimistic,” he adds with a shake of his head. “Don’t worry, Grace. I won’t let anything happen to you.”
“That’s what you say now,” I tell him.
“I got burned rescuing you from a dragon less than an hour after we met,” he reminds me. “That’s what I’ve always said.”
He’s right. He did. “Did I ever thank you for that?”
“I don’t want your thanks, Grace.”
“What do you want?” I breathe, then am ready to kick myself because I’m not sure I should hear the answer to that question.
But it turns out I didn’t have to worry because Hudson is nothing if not cagey. “What do you want?” he counters.
