“We’ll help him,” I tell her. I’ve never laid a roof, but if we make it through the battle that’s to come, I’m sure I can learn how.

I hold the door open for Grace and, as she walks through in front of me, all I can think about is a shower. Feeding. Holding her for a little while as we sleep and make plans for what’s to come.

But the second the door closes behind us, I know that’s not to be. Because for the first time ever, when Nyaz catches sight of us, he walks out from behind the desk.

Grace must realize just how odd it is, too, because she asks, “Nyaz? Are you okay?”

“I am, but I need to talk to you both.” He gestures for us to precede him into the back office that I know is there, but which I’ve never actually seen him inhabit.

“About?” I ask, brows raised as I try to determine what’s going on here.

“Do you remember what I said when you first got here, about settling up?”

Grace looks baffled, but I remember very well what he said. After we got here, it bothered me enough that I asked him about it several times later. He told me he would let us know when the time was right.

Apparently right now, in the middle of this nightmare we’re currently living, is the right bloody time. Fuck all.

“I remember,” I tell him wearily.

“Good. Because it’s time to settle your bill.”

I sigh. I really hope we’re not going to be evicted before I can take a shower.

Kiss My Asset

—Grace—

“Settle our bill?” I repeat in a questioning voice. I know what he means—have always known that we’ll owe him something—but is now really the time to deal with this? When we’re bloody, exhausted, scared, and so sad, it’s all we can do to keep putting one foot in front of the other?

I get that Nyaz might not think we’re going to survive through the next several hours till the sun rises again—God knows, that’s something I’m worried about as well. But still. Couldn’t he have at least waited until we cleaned up?

I start to say as much, but Hudson puts a hand on my arm and, when I glance up at him, the look he gives me urges restraint. I offer the barest nod, partly because I’m so tired that even that small amount of energy seems like too much to expend and partly because I reserve the right to tell Nyaz to back off for a few hours, no matter what Hudson thinks.
