“You’re the one screaming,” I reply calmly. I’m pretty sure she didn’t hear me, but she gets angrier anyway. And this time when she screams, I reach over and turn the music down—leaving her suddenly yelling into a quiet room.
“Why do you have to be so—” Her words bounce off the walls, and she freezes mid-tirade. “Seriously?” she demands. “Now you turn the music off?”
“You looked like you had something to say,” I answer with the most innocent expression I can muster.
For a second, it looks like Grace is going to wrest one of my axes out of my hand and beat me with it, but in the end she just takes a deep breath and blows it out slowly. More’s the pity. I was looking forward to the entertainment.
“Where. Are. My. Pop-Tarts?” she asks after blowing out another breath.
“Pop-Tarts?” I try to pretend confusion, but I’m pretty sure the amused look in my eyes gives me away. “Are you talking about those rectangular pink biscuits you’re always eating?”
She lifts her chin. “First of all, I am not always eating them. I’ve had two packs since we’ve been here. And—”
“Looks to me like you had three whole boxes,” I interrupt. “Maybe more.”
“Secondly,” she continues, but she’s forcing the words out between clenched teeth now.
And maybe I should be ashamed of myself for getting her this riled up, but it’s hard to be ashamed when I’m getting this much entertainment out of the whole thing. And also because I can still hear her sounding all serious when she offered to help me become a better person.
“Secondly,” she repeats when she realizes she doesn’t have my full attention. “They aren’t biscuits.”
“Oh, right. What’s the American word for biscuits again?” I snap my fingers like I’d forgotten, even though we ate cookies together just a few hours ago. “Cookies! You call them cookies, right?”
The sound she makes comes from deep in her throat. It’s low and dangerous and just a little bit primal. Which only makes me grin wider.
This is going better than I’d ever anticipated. If I can keep this up a little longer, we’ll be out of here by morning.
“And thirdly,” Grace growls. “Keep your hands—and everything else of yours—off my Pop-Tarts.”
It’s a warning and a threat rolled up into one, and I can tell she’s deadly serious about it. But that just makes it more fun to poke the bear.
So I do. I lift a brow, give her the most insouciant smile I can manage. And ask, “Or else?”
Then step back and wait for the fireworks.
It doesn’t take long.

“Are you a toddler?” I ask him, because who else responds to justified outrage like that?
