“You okay?” he asks, and though he’s stepped back a little, he’s still got his arms wrapped around my waist to steady me.

And suddenly, the look in his eyes doesn’t make me want to run. It makes me want to stay right here.

Panic roars through me at the thought, has my stomach twisting and my blood pounding in my ears. “I’m fine,” I tell him, and I shove away from him so hard, I go flying out of the shower stall and nearly land on my ass.

He catches me, this time with hands as gentle as a whisper, as he sets me back on my feet. “Grace—”

“Get off me!” I shout, and this time when I push him away, he lets me go.

How Do You
Say Good-Pie?
—Hudson—

“Are you okay?”

I say the words begrudgingly, since it’s not like we’re on the best of terms at the moment. Not that we ever have been, but it’s been especially bad since the great shower incident of last spring.

Ever since that morning, Grace has kept her distance. And I’ve done the same. Which has made the last several months of reorganizing my vinyl collection, studying new birdcalls, and throwing axes exceedingly boring. Once a month, we sit on opposite ends of the couch and watch one of my DVDs together while she munches on popcorn. It’s the best day of the month.

The only other highlight to my days that stretch like a desert between film nights has been her daily wake-up call at seven a.m., followed by, believe it or not, an unspoken star-jumping—or as Grace calls it, jumping jacks—contest. Most days, I win, but every once in a while, I like to shake things up and give her a chance.

This doesn’t feel like she’s pissed off at me, though. This feels like something else.

“Grace?” I prompt when she doesn’t answer. But she doesn’t look up from the book she’s staring at. In fact, I don’t even think she heard me.

Still, I wait for a few more seconds, just in case I’m wrong.

But when a minute comes and goes and she still hasn’t said a word, I clear my throat. Loudly. And ask again, “Hey, Grace. Are you all right?”

She doesn’t say a word—which I’m pretty sure is an answer in itself.

Something’s been wrong with her all day, which I can further tell by the way she’s currently holding herself. Like she’s afraid she’ll shatter if she makes any sudden moves. And maybe she will. I don’t know.

I’ve seen a lot of different facets of Grace over the last year that we’ve been locked up here.

Angry Grace, who is usually determined to see me suffer.
