“You are human, are you not?” I ask, latching on to something else he said. “How have you lived so long?”

The mayor chuckles. “Luckily, time passes differently in the Shadow Realm, my boy.”

“Y-You haven’t found a way back to our world in more than two hundred years?” Grace sputters, and my stomach bottoms out as I realize she was still holding on to hope she would get back to Jaxon one day.

I drag a tight breath into my lungs, try to relieve the crushing pressure in my chest, but it’s no use, so I stop trying. Vampires don’t really need to breathe, right?

“Oh, I searched for a long time before I found this little gem,” the mayor admits, and Grace’s shoulders sink even lower. “But I stopped looking when I became mayor of Adarie. Isn’t this town simply wonderful?”

The mayor is grinning as he throws his hands out in a “just look at all of this” pose.

Then he pushes away from the table and stands. “I’m afraid I have to leave now—a mayor’s work is never done. But before I go…” He stops for a moment, looks back and forth between both of us before continuing. “We expect every member of our community to be productive. All right?”

Before either of us can answer, he tucks his chair in. Then calls over the counter to the woman ringing up another customer. “Gillie! Do me a favor, will you?”

“Of course, Mayor,” the woman says from her spot behind the cash register.

“Grace here needs a job. Do you think you could take down that help wanted sign in your window and give her a chance?”

“For you, Mayor, anything!” She smiles at Grace. “Why don’t you stop by around ten tomorrow morning, and we’ll figure out what you can do. Sound good?”

“Sounds great,” Grace tells her, but she sounds anything but excited. Which makes sense. Getting a job in this place is just one more signal that she’s never going home again.

The mayor beams. “My pleasure. Anything else you need, you just let me know. Here in Adarie, we like to take care of our own.”

“Is that what we are now?” I ask as he walks to the door. “Your own?”

He gives me a steady look. “I’m pretty sure that’s up to you. Your time here—however long or short it is—will always be what you make of it. My advice is to make the best of it.”

The Choux on
the Wrong Foot
—Grace—

The mayor’s advice is still ringing in my ears the next morning when Hudson and I get dressed in our last sets of clean clothes.
