I blink back the tears clogging my throat, but I can’t fault Gillie. I actually feel like I owe her an apology. Not just for me but for every person in Adarie who might have to eat one of my choux swans today. I should probably issue a preemptive apology to them all.

I can only hope Hudson’s day went better than mine. But at this point, I’m not counting on anything.

Ah-Choux

—Hudson—

When I get back to the room, Grace is already stretched across the bed with a pillow over her head. Her clothes from earlier are crumpled on the floor, and I’m sure there’s a trail of flour or sugar or something baking-related leading from the door all the way to her spot in the bed.

“Rough day?” I ask as I bend over to untie my shoes.

“Choux,” is her muffled answer.

“Gesundheit?” I lean over to try to get a better look at her face. “Are you feeling okay?”

“Not achoo,” she groans. “Choux.”

“I don’t even know what that means.” When she doesn’t immediately answer, I pull back a little and think about it. Is she saying, shoo, like she wants me to leave? Maybe I pissed her off somehow earlier, although that hadn’t been my intention. Is a guy not allowed five minutes to get over being punched in the gut?

I think back on our conversation, though, and she seemed fine when she left this morning for work. Still, I have to ask, “Are you telling me to leave?”

I really hope the answer is no, considering I’ve spent the last four hours trying to learn the difference between an angle sash brush and a flagged bristle brush, both of which can be used to apply any number of the 127 different shades of purple paint currently carried by the local hardware store—most of which are so close in color that I can’t tell the difference.

Needless to say, it was an exciting day.

“I was telling you about the choux I made this morning, not shooing you away,” Grace finally answers.

“Your morning had to do with shoes?” I ask skeptically. “What kind of bakery is this?”

“Exactly!” she agrees, then sighs. “Can you promise me that we will never talk about pastries again?”

“I’m a vampire, Grace. I never want to talk about pastries.”

“Still, you need to promise me!”

Because she sounds just a little bit on edge, I hold my hands up in surrender. “I can absolutely promise that,” I agree. “But I invoke the same courtesy for my newfound fear of drill bits.”

“Drill bits?” For that, she manages to lift her head from under the pillow. “The little things that spin round and round in a drill?”

I nearly shudder just thinking about them. “Those are the ones.”
